Why did you apply to the Ontario Internship Program?
I became interested in policy work while completing my law degree, and wanted to gain some practical experience in the field before deciding to pursue it as a career.
What was the highlight of your OIP internship?
I had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work related to social policy in areas I was interested in, touching on important topics like human rights and mental health issues. My manager and colleagues were very supportive, providing career mentorship and guidance even after the internship program ended. The skills and knowledge I developed during my internship provided depth to the professional experiences I have had since.
Describe how the OIP supported your learning and development.
My manager was very supportive and continues to offer mentorship and guidance to this day. She ensured I was able to work on diverse and interesting files with varying levels of responsibility, and with many of my senior colleagues in the office.
How has your participation in the OIP contributed to your professional success?
After my internship, I completed my articles with the legal services branch of the same ministry. My time in the internship provided me with a well-rounded and in-depth understanding of ministry business that enhanced my ability to conduct varied legal tasks. The skills I developed in policy pertaining to evidence-based research, consultation, collaborating across ministries and drafting research and policy documents support my current work in operational policy at MTO. I was also able to learn and participate in evaluation and performance measurement work that I hope to engage with again in the future.
